We're in the process of designing our straw bale house in a valley in north east Victoria (near Omeo) and the possibilities are endless! We're probably going for a standard rectangle house, but one suggestion was a yurt. That would be good to access our views I imagine.
Has anyone seen a straw bale yurt? I'm wondering if the round shape would make it completely impractical for straw bales. Or overly expensive.
Does anyone have any information about this? It's something I'd at least like to look at before we finalise the design and head off to the technical drawer. Thanks
Hi Helenka,
Goulburn Yurt works have a variety of sizes available.
I have not seen one of these with Strawbale walls,
although other round strawbale buildings have been built.
Some additional engineering may be required for Goulburn yurts to support the additional weight of the rendered bale walls, ( this should NOT be an issue ).
curveing bales is quite simple and we have curved bales for quite tight curves previously.
I'm about to submit my plans to the draftsman for my loadbearing strawbale house.
There was a strawbale yurt featured in an Earth Garden magazine issue a couple of years back. I'll look for the info and add it here later.
I was also advised that the curves -an 6m walls- wouldn't be a problem. This is a good thing, as I have a lot of curved walls .. all of them, in fact.
My theory was, I wasn't going to build another house in my lifetime, so why not 'aim for the stars' and do what I want? Rather that, than sit back later with an 'easier' design and think "I could have done better ..."
