diy lime putty
dunkhellserin
can you make your own lime putty from bags of builders lime, what type is best is it worth it, cost and effort wise

harald
We do our own Lime putty. yes it's worth it,money and effort wise but you need time and space to store your drums so the putty can mature. We use hydrated lime for slacking. less dangerous, readily available and delivers satisfactory Lime Putty.
Good luck

It is possible that hydrated lime is sold as builders lime. I have not heard of Marvel as a brand. Here in the Blue Mountains they sell Blue Circle or Cement Australia.
I reckon brand won't matter to much though.

I'm interesting in making my own lime putty, with powdered hydrated lime. Do I need to do it in drums? I don't have any at present. Would a wheelie bin suffice?

harald
I'd say only just because of the safety aspect involved. Lime putty is a reasonably dangerous substance and it is best to be able to secure the lid firmly to prevent access by children and avoid spillage. The material, plastic , though is fine

We've found old steel baths from the tip to be most suitable as they are easy to get the putty out of - when there's not much putty left in a drum or wheelie bin, you need to lean your body into the lime to get the last few buckets out... yucky

Ditto to what Pennymilburn suggests - we used steel bath, short handled spade, paint tin & conc mixer. Should get 5-6 20kg
bags hydrated lime in each mix to top of bath.
- half fill the bath with water, open bag sprinkle in over whole surface to avoid big clumps- mix/chop/stir at with spade
- should get 3-4 bags in before needing to add more water for final bags - mix/chop/stir
-top up level to top, cover and let stand overnight
We found good mix to able to be nicely sliced away with spade into 20l paint tin and into mixer. 1 part putty:2.5 washed white sand

But def put secure/weighty cover over and dust mask when emptying bags.
We got 10-15 mixes out of each bath batch of 6x20kg which lasted us 1-2 days
Have fun

Would the Durra panels (the pressed strawpanels) be an option? They both look nice and insulate at the same time.
